The area is named for James Hogg, a Scottish miller and distillery operator who settled the area in 1824. In 1856, his sons John and William Hogg subdivided their father's estate, calling it Hogg's Hollow. A few houses went up (only four of which are still standing), but the neighbourhood as we know it today didn't start being built until the 1920s.
