Cedarvale lies just south of Eglinton Ave. and west of Bathurst St. adjacent to Forest Hill Village. It is one of Toronto’s hottest-selling neighbourhoods. Buyers are attracted to the mid-town location, the quiet streets and the jewel of the neighbourhood, the Cedarvale Ravine.

Homes with a view

Most of the homes in the neighbourhood were built between the 1920s and the 1950s. An interesting mix of housing styles includes Arts and Crafts, Georgian, Tudor and Modern architecture. The finest homes enjoy extensive views along the edge of the ravine. While two-storey homes dominate the neighbourhood, there is a sprinkling of two and three bedroom bungalows which are gradually being renovated or replaced.

The neighbourhood that almost wasn’t

In the 1960s, the proposed extension of the Spadina Expressway threatened this quiet area. A number of homes from Eglinton down to Heathdale Rd. were expropriated and the ravine was in jeopardy of disappearing. In 1974, the defeat of the continuation of the expressway (now called the W. R. Allen Road) by vocal neighbourhood opposition saved the integrity and serenity of the neighbourhood and preserved the ravine as a natural resource.

Fields of green

The trail through the Cedarvale ravine is a favourite with cyclists, joggers and cross country skiers. The path opens up into Cedarvale Park, which has lots of green space and great winter toboggan runs. The park is home to Phil White indoor skating arena, tennis courts and playing fields. Nearby Glencedar Park was one of the first creative playgrounds established by the former City of York.

Central convenience

The nearby shopping area on Eglinton Ave. West offers a wonderful mix of restaurants, coffee shops, clothing and gift boutiques, specialty food shops, bakeries and services. Residents are minutes to the Allen Rd., which leads into the 401 highway and arterial network. The subway at Eglinton West Station whisks passengers to all parts of the city in minutes. The area is also well served by bus routes.
